Stone travertine in decoration and construction

Travertine finish almost as popular as marble. Travertine (another name for a stone is calcareous tuff) is a natural material of the same origin as marble. Limestone, which has lain in the rock from 50 to 300 thousand years, is transformed into travertine under pressure and time, and then, after a few thousand years more, into marble.

Travertine stone It has the properties of both limestone and marble. It is very decorative, while resistant to weathering. Hard enough to withstand mechanical damage, and soft enough to make it comfortable to handle.

There are a lot of travertine deposits in the world, and one of the most famous is Turkey, Pamukkale. This place is loved by tourists for the extraordinary beauty of white travertine terraces with bowls of natural ponds.

Due to the variety of colors and shades of this mineral - from white and dark brown to red and burgundy, travertine lining can be used in any style direction of design. At the same time, the shades of each stone plate are unique, and allow you to create a truly original, exclusive interior.

Travertine finish outside the house will give fire resistance - this stone does not burn. And it is resistant to precipitation, does not rust, does not rot. At the same time, its weight is less than the weight of marble due to its porosity and lower density. The same qualities increase its thermal insulation properties. The sound of travertine also conducts worse than marble.

Travertine stone resistant to the effects of negative temperatures, it can be used for exterior decoration of houses where winter frosts are common. To make the stone waterproof, it is additionally treated with a special solution. After that, it can be used not only for exterior decoration, but also for landscape design.

Quite often, travertine is used to cover floors - it is resistant to abrasion, and is even suitable for creating paths, bridges, embankments.

For travertine cladding it needs to be processed, and this can be done even with the help of a conventional circular saw with a diamond disc. As a result, individual parts can be manufactured with high precision, maintaining the desired dimensions with small tolerances. A travertine tile can be laid in such a way that there will be no seams - its edges will neatly come together without leaving a small gap.

In the installation of travertine tiles no more difficult than the usual ceramic: you only need to clean and level the surface.

There are three main areas of application of travertine stone:

  • Construction Materials,
  • Decoration Materials,
  • soil alkalization.

Exterior finish

Travertine is easily processed, it is quite easy to grind and polish. Ground and polished travertine is used in construction for exterior cladding of facades. Travertine blocks are used as a building material. Often travertine finish complements the finish of other materials.

Railings and balusters, columns and moldings for window and door portals design, as well as many other architectural elements of buildings, are made of travertine massif.

Interior finish

In the premises used travertine lining walls and floors, cut out from it sinks and even baths, make window sills, stairs, countertops, work surfaces, bar counters, as well as a variety of decorative elements of the interior.

Polished travertine has one very useful property that distinguishes it from marble: it is not slippery. Therefore, quite often they trim the premises of bathrooms.

Agriculture

When processing travertine nothing disappears: small pieces and crumb go into grinding, and then the crushed stone is introduced into the acidified soil. Due to its alkaline properties, limestone reduces soil acidity, which promotes plant growth.
