A bedroom without windows: design features

Rooms without windows are not as rare as they seem. Such "deaf" rooms appear when refitting the so-called pantries, storage rooms in city apartments, village houses, arranging internal partitions in large spaces that were previously considered uninhabited. Such rooms are organized under the stairs in duplex apartments, semi-basement rooms. It is not difficult to create a unique design of a bedroom without windows, if you choose the right finish, sufficient lighting, and a beautiful imitation of false windows.

Features, advantages, disadvantages

In a room where there is no sunlight at all, you hardly want to equip a study, a living room. For the bedroom, this option is not bad at all, especially if it assumes only a night's sleep.

The main advantages of this room:

  • will save the situation in houses where there is not enough space - they arrange a room in a niche, a storeroom;
  • the sleeping light will not be awakened by the morning light;
  • no need to worry about the choice of window drapes;
  • Wallpaper does not fade at all, as it is not exposed to direct sunlight.

Minuses:

  • no ventilation - it will have to be equipped additionally;
  • sufficient artificial lighting is required at any time of the day, which will lead to additional financial costs for electricity.

If there is an opportunity to make real windows in any way, this chance should be used - this will reduce the cost of lighting, ventilation, design.

What to consider when developing a design

There are no windows in ready-made residential buildings - it is forbidden to equip them, in accordance with current regulations. But if, in connection with the replenishment in the family, other reasons, additional space is still needed, then in order to “legitimize” the redevelopment, in the project a bedroom without windows is indicated as non-residential - a storage room, dressing room, office, library, etc.

Sometimes it is not possible to agree on a project, then instead of a full-fledged wall, a folding or sliding partition is mounted - this allows you to “let in” sunlight into the room during the day and retire there at night.

Ventilation

The organization of ventilation here is necessary, since there is no possibility just to open the window. Without artificial ventilation, the room has all the chances to become a mold, fungus, especially for the first floors of buildings, where the humidity is constantly high. For small spaces use a compact air handling unit, which creates a flow of fresh air, removing the "old".

Lighting

It will take a lot of lamps - their number, location, design, directly depend on the style of the room being designed, its area. It is important not just to hang some chandelier with a lot of bright light bulbs, but to create the impression of having daylight. This is achieved by installing small lighting fixtures that diffuse light well. It is desirable that they themselves were not noticeable at the same time - the lamps are placed on the ceiling, in any small niches, behind items of furniture, etc.

The light temperature of the light bulbs is chosen as close as possible to the street white light. Spotlights are placed in such a way that the light fluxes from each of them intersect, creating a uniform illumination of each corner - this is how the room looks more spacious. Backlight preferred adjustable in brightness.

Additional lighting using LED strip mounted on the lower or upper contour of the furniture, the perimeter of the ceiling, floor, and between objects, giving the room "airiness".

Color spectrum

The space of the storeroom, storage room, in the city apartment, where the “deaf” bedroom is equipped, is about four to six square meters. In a private country house, it is a little more, but it is still impossible to call the room overly spacious. For such rooms suitable warm, light shades. If the bedroom is combined with the living room through a glass partition, daylight penetrates there, more saturated, cold shades are allowed. The ceiling is always lighter than the walls, and the floor is slightly darker.

The most popular combinations:

  • snow-white with sunny yellow;
    apricot with amaranth-purple;
  • orchid with sand;
  • antique azure with apple;
  • periwinkle with beige-red;
  • quartz gray with cream;
  • white-green with light basalt;
  • mustard with frosty heavenly;
  • sponge cake with orange yellow;
  • spring pink with sky blue;

  • pale chestnut gray-brown;
  • pearl with khaki;
  • lemon with carrot;
  • marsh with bronze;
  • pebble gray with coral;
  • beaver with light canvas;
  • Verdepesky with brilliant blue;
  • milky with light coffee;
  • wheeler with crawler;
  • yellowish gray with stone pink;
  • canary with brick red;
  • lavender with creamy-azure;
  • ghostly white with sepia.

The narrower the room, the fewer colors, shades apply to it. It is recommended to use one or two basic colors, plus one more in addition - to create shallow accents.

Room furnishing

Furniture does not need much - the more space in the room, the more spacious it seems. This is especially true of children's bedrooms. The central place is occupied by a bed - single, one and a half, double. Next to it - one or two bedside tables, in the corner - a wardrobe or a chest of drawers for linen. If space is left, a desk with a chair, a dressing table with a mirror, a compact sports corner are placed here.

The furnishing is selected for a particular interior style - for tight spaces the best fit:

  • minimalism;
  • Japanese;
  • Provence;
  • ecological;
  • modern;
  • high tech.

Styles such as Empire, Baroque, Art Deco, are unacceptable - they require very large spaces, as they have a huge number of large carved details, rich, luxurious decor.

All pieces of furniture are preferred wooden, light. Bleached oak, spruce, larch, certain types of cedar, ash, beech, hornbeam, birch (including Karelian), alder, linden, etc. will do. Wood is distinguished by its strength, durability and environmental friendliness. Also used MDF and laminated chipboard, but for children's bedrooms they are rarely used.

Glossy furniture made of plastic, glass, which has mirrored surfaces, gives the room space, "airiness." The abundance of metal elements - the legs of the table, a chair, handles on the cabinets, headboards, decorations, will benefit here. Brilliant chrome parts reflect the light, increasing its actual amount.

The focus is on the arrangement of the bed - high-quality orthopedic mattress, the same pillow required. Upholstery fabric is selected natural, preferably light.

Use of mirrors

Mirrors, with their successful installation, are visually able to increase the available space at times. The design is often made the size of the entire wall or ceiling, making sandblasting patterns, story drawings. Sometimes the mirror is inserted into the window frame or its imitation, is decorated with lighting devices - the mirror surface perfectly reflects the light, increasing its number many times.

Mirror-window with a light along the contour and the corresponding frame, mounted above the dressing table - here it simultaneously performs the function of a window opening, and is also a subject that allows you to apply make-up, do your hair, etc.

Options for simulating windows for additional lighting

The problem of lack of natural light is most often solved by installing fluorescent lamps mounted in convenient places. But modern designers recommend to approach the issue creatively - to arrange a high-quality imitation of natural lighting with the help of artificial windows, or to use the luminous flux penetrating from other rooms.

What is the imitation of windows?

  • It has a positive effect on the psychological state of a person — many feel uncomfortable in an enclosed space;
  • in the presence of defects of the walls hides them, makes it less noticeable;
  • visually expands the space;
  • diversifies the design of the bedroom.

Such "unreal" windows are made of any size, configuration, create the impression of real ones or are made with a futuristic fantasy landscape behind them, glasses, liquid crystal elements are inserted at will.

Windows to the next room

Usually behind the wall of the "deaf" room there is a room in which there are windows. Therefore, the window is cut in the interior wall, creating at least some semblance of natural lighting. There are several window openings - they also go out into one or different rooms of an apartment, house, are decorated with transparent or frosted glass.

Transom - a variation of the interior window, located under the ceiling. Similar elements are found in apartments "Khrushchev" - between the bathroom and kitchen. The transom does not violate personal space, but allows daylight to penetrate the room.

Light false windows

This design is bought finished or made independently of light boxes, LED strip, photo wallpaper of a suitable size. The design of the windows is selected for the existing interior:

  • minimalism - a plastic rectangular frame with a picture depicting a simple landscape, with a minimum amount of detail;
  • futurism - a window in the form of a porthole, followed by cosmic distances or the outlandish nature of an unknown planet with bizarre plants;
  • classical - an ancient castle or palace behind the window, it is decorated with a baguette, like a painting;
  • Japanese - the frame is simple, bright, the landscape depicts a "rock garden", blossoming sakura;
  • Provence - the construction is made by "house" carvings, carved wooden shutters, behind a window is a summer rural landscape;
  • high-tech - metal or wood frame, in the picture - a megacity with skyscrapers, modern infrastructure.

There are five ready-made options:

  • Classic - A high resolution 3D image depicting a window frame and the landscape behind it may have painted curtains, stained glass windows, a window sill. Scenery options - sunset, forest lawn, flowering field, old town, etc .;
  • with a mirror - usually mounted on the ceiling, decorated with a beautiful frame (carved, gilded, patinated), creating a glamorous or noble interior, significantly expanding the space;
  • translucent - a pseudo-glass made of opaque glass; plastic also has a 3D effect. The panel is mounted in a niche, on the ceiling or slightly departing from the wall. Behind it place any objects - flowers, leaves, figures of people, animals, etc .;
  • LED backlit - most popular lately. The design helps to increase the illumination, originally zone the room, creating accents in the right places. The brightness of the light is regulated with a special remote control;
  • video construction is a panel on liquid crystals, the picture on it changes periodically. This is a video of a sunny day from dawn to dusk, clouds floating across the sky and changing, storm winds and thunderstorms, accompanied by a corresponding voice acting.

If you select an image of a sunny day, summer nature, sea landscape as a picture in the window, such a design will lift the mood to those who contemplate even on a rainy or winter evening.

Glass partitions, walls

One of the walls of the room can be completely made entirely of glass - transparent, opaque, colored. This design will be cheaper than a wooden, plasterboard partition, on which you will have to install many light sources - daylight from another room will penetrate sufficiently through transparent glass. A wall entirely consisting of glass blocks does not prevent the sun's rays from entering the room, hiding what is happening inside the bedroom.
Tip: a fully transparent partition, if necessary, close the blinds, roller shutters, any curtains mounted on the ceiling cornice.

Attic windows

When planning the attic, sometimes you have to create a "deaf" bedroom. But with the lighting here it is much simpler - the ceilings are rather high, which allows the partition not to be completed, the windows located on the slopes of the roof give a lot of light if they are large.

On the spacious attic floor - in the middle of it, small rooms without windows are often created. In part, this is convenient - if the attic is poorly insulated, then the room, located far from the external walls, is protected from drafts. In an ordinary village house there is not too much space in the attic, and the angle of inclination of the roof allows you to become full-length not everywhere. The windows here are purely symbolic - one or two under the ceiling, they are suitable only for ventilation, if not made "deaf". The issues of lighting in this case are solved by arranging false windows that have a “day” highlight.

Designer Tips for Wall Window Decor

Stylish design of the "deaf" walls can be easily done in any room. The walls are often pasted over with wallpaper murals, made in bright colors. The theme is chosen different - sunset in the steppe or forest lake, a landscape with skyscrapers or a village road stretching into the distance, wide-format images of animals or colorful abstractions. Instead of photo wallpapers, real pictures are used in frames - there should not be many of them, two or four is enough.

If the walls are painted with white gloss paint, the room will also appear lighter - the white color has reflective properties. The wall, completely enclosed by an opaque curtain, gives the impression that behind the curtain one or two windows are hidden.

Sometimes, instead of one of the walls, a flat high aquarium is created that creates a unique atmosphere - it is necessarily highlighted. A bedroom without windows can also be a passage - for example, if it is combined with a nursery located behind a partition.

An interesting solution is to use a real window frame, but with a picture that imitates the view from the window. The construction is mounted on the wall, if desired, it is formed by a window sill, with artificial plants standing on it in flowerpots, shutters, curtains.

Conclusion

The interior of a small bedroom without windows will be quite comfortable with its quality improvement. Making a small room size will be cheaper than more spacious. Modern options for such spaces, there are many, the main thing is not to overload it with unnecessary details. When drafting a project, apartments turn to specialists for help, and if there is some experience, they do it all on their own.
