Parquet board in the interior

We owe the appearance of the floorboard in the interior to a certain Gustav Cheru. Even his grandfather, who lived in the Swedish forests, had a weakness for this material and made doors out of it. The family business was inherited by Gustav, who at the beginning of the last century developed a unique technology for gluing three layers of wooden lamellae. This method allowed us to obtain heavy-duty doors that were not afraid of any temperature fluctuations or sudden changes in humidity. By the beginning of the Second World War, Gustav Cher patented this technology and expanded its production, starting to produce a "prefabricated" floor. After another couple of decades, his company refined the technique, adding to it a topcoat with varnish. Nowadays this material (besides the parquet itself) has a new competitor - laminate. However, the board still retains its leading position in strength. In budget versions, the floors are covered with carpet, linoleum, and luxury apartments are decorated with self-leveling “layers”, which in terms of durability are not inferior to concrete.

All of the above materials can only imitate the natural wood pattern that traditionally decorates the surface of the floorboard. Given the current fashion for everything natural and environmentally friendly, this coating fits perfectly into the interior composition. Consider a variety of floorboards and evaluate its advantages and disadvantages.

Pros and cons of the parquet floor

Do not confuse the floorboard with an array of wood. In the latter case, solid pieces of wood are used. The board is a "layered" structure consisting of three components, where the lower one is most often made of inexpensive needles, and the top one is made of valuable species veneer. Between themselves, they are securely fastened with polyurethane glue, which is non-toxic and does not react to temperature changes. Wood fibers of the two inner layers, as a rule, are arranged perpendicularly relative to each other. That is, they are placed longitudinally on the lower segment, and transversely on the middle segment. Thus, they achieve good material strength and aesthetic beauty from the "front" side. The thickness of each layer does not exceed 3.5-4 mm, and the length and width of a single fragment can reach 250 cm and 25 cm, respectively.

Fragments are interconnected by locking principle. The board is classified into three types depending on the number of wood "strips" in one segment:

Single sidebandIdeally imitates an array of wood. Visually expands the room.
Two wayIn this embodiment, the illusion of solid wood is lost.
Three-laneSimulates parquet.

The floorboard has several advantages:

  • Beauty and environmental friendliness. The material is completely natural, does not emit toxic substances.
  • Relatively low cost when compared with parquet. When, for example, owners want to decorate the floor with an expensive type of wood, the purchase of its array will be a real challenge for the wallet. Parquet board allows you to restrict only the upper layer of veneer, and inside you can use the budget needles.
  • Resistance to temperature extremes and fluctuations in humidity levels. In fact, the floorboard can even be used to finish the bathroom or kitchen, but frequent cleaning can quickly "remove" the gloss of the top coating and give the material an unsightly look.
  • The board perfectly absorbs sounds, providing high-quality insulation of the floor.
  • The material does not deform, which often happens with solid wood when humidity changes.
  • The board is easier to lay than the flooring, so the installation does not take much time.

Unfortunately, the material is not without certain disadvantages:

  • The surface is quite sensitive to mechanical stress. Although the floorboard is covered with a special protective layer, it is easier to scratch it than an array of wood and it’s just as stupid to compare material with this criterion to a leveling floor or ceramic tile.
  • The board is very sensitive to aggressive household chemicals, so when cleaning floors, you need to select the compositions carefully.
  • At damage of any site it is necessary to replace a fragment entirely. Unlike parquet, the board cannot be subjected to chiseling, in which another layer of wood is exposed. She is only removed a layer of scratched lacquer, which requires replacement.

Another advantage will be a fairly rich color range, which the floorboard can boast. The material is presented in various tint variations: from gray to rich chocolate.

The protective layer of the floorboard is made of varnish or oil. The first gives the material a glossy shine, and the second makes the surface matte.

Wood variety

The top layer of veneer is made of walnut, apple, cherry, merbau, ash, beech, dark and light oak, kempas, larch, maple and mountain pine, which is valued higher than its ordinary coniferous relative. The choice of finishing layer of wood causes the cost of the material. Modern markets also offer more exotic options: acacia, bamboo, dussia, zebrano, hevea, elm, olive, moabi, wenge, eucalyptus, rosewood, teak, hickory, sucupir, yarra, imbia or eben. The two lower layers are traditionally made of inexpensive needles (usually pine). This method of combining sawn timber can significantly reduce the cost of flooring, the surface of which adorns the tree of valuable species.

Sizes of parquet boards

Standards for the size of the floorboard simply does not exist. You can only highlight the limitations on the lower and upper bar, which necessarily fit a piece of material from a bona fide manufacturer:

  • The thickness of the board can be from 7 to 22 mm. The thicker the material, the higher its strength.
  • Board length usually ranges from 100-250 cm.
  • Width is 13-25 cm. Narrow boards, as a rule, single-sided.

The larger the fragments, the easier it is to mount them, but it is more difficult to put them into the original pattern.

Texture and color

Before working with the material, the planks of the future board must be carefully selected (selected). It is carried out according to the following criteria: texture, color, presence of knots, cracks or sapwood (top layer of wood, located directly under the bark). Depending on the selection board, it is classified into three types:

  • Rustic. The slats may vary in color. On the surface there are "cracks", sapwood or traces of knots. The similar covering organically fits into an interior of a country house or giving. Suitable for a range of rustic and ethnic styles.
  • Natur. The slats have slight color differences. Defects in the form of knots are present, but in small quantities.
  • Select The surface of such a floorboard can be called almost perfect. On the sawn lines there is only woody picture without defects. Ideally similar coating for classic interiors.

As for color, the variations are mass. Most of them are a gradation of brown - the natural shade of wood. For example, merbau has a saturated almost red color. Walnut just a couple of tones lighter. The shade of wenge is deep burgundy and is bordered by purple. Eben has a nice contrasting texture, which combines black and brown. Maple, ash, larch and birch have light brown shades. The surface of zebrano is decorated with dark and light brown stripes.

Styling methods

Laying floorboard in many ways similar to the installation of parquet, only by simplified technology. Regardless of the way the floor is assembled, the following conditions must be met:

  • The floor surface must be clean and free from defects.
  • If the floorboard lay in the cold, its temperature should be equal to room temperature.
  • Laying can be carried out only after full completion of draft works.
  • Humidity in the room should not exceed 60%.

There are only three styling options:

  • Floating (dry). In this method, the fragments are interconnected by the thorn-groove technology. The installation option is considered the most simple, but it is recommended to use it only for boards, the thickness of which does not exceed 14 cm.
  • Pasting with a floor and among themselves. Boards are connected with a special composition, which provides a more reliable hitch. The surface of the floor should be perfectly flat. Among the shortcomings, only difficulties in repairing or replacing individual fragments that are difficult to “tear off” are noted. The method is applied to boards thicker than 14 cm.
  • Use of mechanical fasteners. Fix the board with screws, which are driven into the grooves at a certain angle. Some use nails, but such an attachment will be less reliable. The technology is used for boards that are thicker than 20 cm.

In the latter case, the method is relevant for wooden rough floors or when using lag, which is resorted to in the presence of strong surface defects. For trimming fragments when fitting under the area of the room, use a jigsaw or a fine-toothed saw.

Herringbone

Herringbone laying is considered to be a classic version, which has been harassed in the last 50 years. However, after a period of calm, the technology has again become fashionable, having gained a second wind. It is no longer associated with typical interiors of the Soviet era. The fragments form rows in which each segment is placed relative to the next at an angle of 90 degrees. Herringbone can be double or single, straight or diagonal. In the latter case, simple styling is used, in 2 strips or 1 to 3. A straight line can also be classical, in 2 fragments or with different lengths of segments.

Because of the play of light, individual strips, even with an identical shade, will be perceived as fragments with different textures.

Ladder or "French" Christmas tree

The "ladder" or the French herringbone differs from the usual only in joints. Conventionally, the whole room can be divided into strips of equal width. Each of them is filled with slats, which are located relative to each other in parallel, and with respect to the adjacent row - at an angle of 90 degrees. “Ladder” this type of installation is called because of the forming “steps” between the rows that pass through the whole room, if you look at the floor from above.

Deck installation

Deck installation is considered the easiest installation option. The result is a beautiful and concise picture, with which you can even adjust the visual perception of the room and visually expand or narrow it. Each subsequent row of segments is parallel to the previous one. Hence the name of the technology, since it is this option used on the ship decks. Only the shift of fragments relative to adjacent rows differs. Option randomly or chaotic styling does not imply accurate measurements and the segments can be positioned with a different offset. The most common styling with a shift of 1/3 or 1/2. In the latter case, the effect of a brickwork is obtained. Deck installation can be straight or diagonal. Here the options differ only in the angle (90 or 45 degrees) between the rows and walls.

With a diagonal method, the material consumption usually increases by about 15%.

Square or Vietnamese

"Flip" or laying squares is one of the easiest ways. In fact, this is a primitive "braided line", which we will talk about below. Fragments "get off" in squares (usually 4-5 strips). In each individual module, the slats are parallel to each other. The squares are laid in such a way that the fragments guiding them are at right angles to the neighboring ones. It is not recommended to knock down strips in large modules, if they cover the floor in a room with modest dimensions. This is equivalent to the use of large prints in confined spaces: visually zakhlamit and reduce the space.

Basket or basket

"Basket" fully justifies its name. The slats are brought together in modules whose guides are located at a right angle relative to each other. Complicated drawing that uses rectangles. They seem to become one straight, which periodically overlap each other. Small square “voids” are necessarily formed between the modules, which, as a rule, are filled with a material with an excellent texture in order to emphasize an unusual pattern.

Modular parquet

Modular parquet is a surface that is assembled in pieces, like a mosaic. Use strips of different woods, differing in texture and color. It is a sin to cover such a floor with a carpet, because it itself is already a stylish decoration. Modular parquet is not suitable for small and cramped rooms.

Art

As they say, there is no limit to perfection, and instead of typical styling options, you can develop your own, which is completely subordinate to the designer's imagination. In some cases, resorting to a combination of several types. Actually similar solution when zoning a room. In other cases, well-known options complicate additional details, creating an original, author's pattern. If the slats are laid too intricate, then the use of different types of wood is not recommended, since the floor will turn out to be too coarse and variegated. Emphasis should be placed on one thing: either a drawing or a texture.

Use of parquet on the walls

The floorboard is used not only for covering the floor. This type of finishing material is also excellent for decorating walls. Looks design solution is stylish, beautiful and very unusual. Sheathe floorboard, as a rule, only accent areas.
Fragments are mounted either on glue or using mechanical fasteners. The second option is ideal if there are irregularities or defects on the walls that are difficult to fix with a putty. When installing, first, the rails are fixed on the surface, the height of which is adjusted to the desired height, and the floorboard is attached to them. Most often resort to deck type of installation, as it harmoniously looks on any surfaces.

"Parquet" wall ideally infused into the country, Provence (if you use light shades of wood), eco style. She can replace the brickwork, which has become traditional for the loft, high-tech and Scandinavian direction. Do not be mistaken, believing that this option will “cheapen” the interior. It combines perfectly even with expensive finishes of luxury apartments.

Parquet in the living room

The parquet in the living room is matched to the color of the furniture. Compatibility by this criterion is considered basic. Combination can be carried out according to the principle of contrast or analogy. The first option is chosen for spacious living rooms, where this combination does not damage the visual perception of the interior. In classical halls, the board is laid with a Christmas tree (normal and French) or in a free, artistic way. For rustic motifs suitable deck or modular version.

In the bedroom

The floorboard is used in classic, Scandinavian, rustic bedrooms. Actually similar solution for chalets, lofts, eco-style. Pleasant to the touch material with a soft texture eliminates the need to wear slippers in the morning, because it is nice to walk barefoot. Calm shades of natural wood will be pleasing to the eye and create additional comfort in the room for rest. For the bedroom, it is recommended to choose a floorboard, the top layer of which is made of bleached oak, larch, ash, maple.

In the kitchen

Parquet board for the kitchen is not the best option. Its use is justified if all the flooring in the apartment has already been made in this material. It is necessary to select the floorboard under the texture of the headset. Fixed to the surface of the floor need to "dry" method. Since the most "dangerous" zones - the tops of the working triangle (near the stove, sink and refrigerator) will inevitably be overwritten and lose their "commodity" look, they will have to be replaced with new ones over time. It is easiest to repair it with a “dry” type of fastening of the slats. Choose a floorboard for the kitchen should be only from trusted manufacturers, so that the indicators of its strength reached maximum values. Poor quality material will deteriorate due to chronic changes in temperature and humidity during cooking.

In the nursery

In the nursery, you must use only environmentally friendly materials for decoration. The floorboard is ideal in this regard. However, in this room, it is also worth laying the "dry" method. A restless child will always find a way to stain / wet the coating, which as a result may be hopelessly spoiled. The floorboard has a low coefficient of "slipperiness", thereby greatly reducing the risk of falls and bruises.

Care Tips

The floorboard is considered very capricious in the care of the material. At first, after laying on the floor, it is not recommended to jump, run and expose it to other serious loads.
If you have to rearrange the movement of furniture, the floorboard is covered with thick cardboard. Регулярно пол нужно чистить пылесосом, используя специальные мягкие насадки. Если в доме есть «когтистые» домашние питомцы, то их «ноготки» придется систематически подстригать, чтобы исключить возможность оцарапывания верхнего слоя.Wet cleaning should be done only with a soft, slightly damp cloth or sponge. In no case can not use abrasive compounds in which there are small solid particles. Such substances will inevitably scratch the top layer of the floorboard. You can not walk on the floor in heels and put sand on it. The effect of the latter is akin to abrasive compositions. For mopping recommend the use of special tools that are designed specifically for the care of floorboard. Mobile furniture should be purchased on special rubber wheels. Alternatively, you can buy special felt pads, which are fixed below.

Conclusion

The floorboard will be a worthy decoration, as expensive apartments and low-cost interiors. The covering ideally combines the optimum price, esthetic beauty and durability. The technology patented by Gustav Cher, remains relevant even after half a century. We can safely say that it has passed the test of time. Is this the main indicator of quality for the finishing material?
