Kitchen design with ventilation duct

The ledge of the ventilation shaft in the kitchen is a little difficult for experienced designers, and beginners sometimes do not even know what to do with it. Most often, in this case, design concealed ventilation, build on a fake fireplace or a column, depending on the location of the architectural element. The original design of the kitchen with a ventilation box rightfully claims to be unique, because there are a great many options for its decoration, successful disguise.

The importance of ventilation ducts

This object, which provides normal air exchange, is mounted mainly in rooms with high humidity - a bathroom, toilet, kitchen. This is one of the most important engineering systems of a dwelling house, preventing excessive concentration of moisture, dust accumulation, and the presence of foreign odors.

Manufacturing materials:

  • galvanized metal - used in residential and non-residential premises, the element is durable, resistant to corrosion, lightweight, has a rectangular or circular cross section;
  • asbestos cement slabs - are used very rarely in modern times, since the material is too heavy and the structure has low tightness;
  • reinforced concrete blocks - these elements have special openings for arranging natural ventilation ducts, have high strength, are designed before construction begins;
  • PVC is used most often for organizing air ducts for kitchen premises, durable, cheap, resistant to aggressive environment, almost silent, easy to install, comes in various shapes, sizes, colors, but has low resistance to fire.

Independent reconstruction of the duct threatens to damage the duct system and, as a result, a substantial fine. For redevelopment or dismantling will require a special permit.

Location features, shape, size

In the apartments of the P-44T series, unlike their predecessors P-44, the ventilation box is not located in the standard way - in the corridor. Multisectional high-rise buildings of the KOPE, P-111M, P-55M series and many others were equipped with natural exhaust systems through ventilation units located in plumbing fixtures and in the kitchen. The area of kitchen space in the houses of the series P44 is 8-10 square meters, but the volume duct, pipes, make the room closer.
Inside the structure there are two or three channels through which air containing dust and products of combustion is “drawn out” from the apartment. Ventilation ducts consist of horizontal, vertical sections. The influx of fresh air occurs when airing through the open window.
Often, plastic ventilation elements with a different internal cross-section, round, rectangular in shape, are placed in the houses. The most common are round, having a diameter:

  • 80 mm, section 50.3 square. cm.;
  • 100 mm and 78.5 square meters. see, respectively;
  • 125 mm and 122.7 square meters. cm.;
  • 150 mm and 176.7 square meters. cm.

Rectangular ventilation systems are easier to place in the interior, above the kitchen set, behind the stretch ceiling. Their usual sizes are:

  • 110 to 55 mm, section 60.5 square. cm.;
  • 120 to 60 mm and 72 square meters. cm.;
  • 204 to 60 mm and 122.4 square meters. cm.

The box itself is made rectangular or irregular in shape, and is located in the corner on the right, or in the center of the room, less often - at the very entrance to the kitchen. In order to avoid freezing and accumulation of excess moisture, the ventilation system is located only indoors.

A wide selection of colors of pipes will allow you to choose the design for any interior, and for complex shapes there are tees, adapters, and other elements.

What to consider when finishing

The box in the kitchen is usually a corner, where most of the communications pass - this is neatly enough to fit into the interior easily enough. Less often, it is located in the middle of one of the walls; then it is a little more difficult to hide the element.

When finishing this design, it is important to consider:

  • box dimensions;
  • its location;
  • place in the overall project;
  • manufacturing materials;
  • stylistic design of the kitchen;
  • desired financial costs.

When designing a kitchen, you should choose the finish depending on the location of the ventilation structure. When located in the area of the gas stove, it is forbidden to finish paper wallpaper, vinyl siding, as this is excessively combustible materials. When this element is located next to the sink, decorative plaster is not recommended, wallpaper, except for special waterproof.

When the box itself is not there, but communications pipes run through the entire kitchen along the ceiling, it is carried out independently of plasterboard or metal.

Masking methods

Masking the design is possible in different ways:

  • "hide" behind the fronts of the headset - if the configuration of the furniture allows;
  • arrange with various functional elements;
  • cover with plasterboard and plastic decorations;
  • file as a central "highlight" of the interior;
  • make it almost imperceptible or divert attention with a bright decor.

The combination of two or three methods of masking at the same time, will allow you to create a cozy, original interior. If you want to divert attention from the above element, while visually expanding the room, using various light techniques. For example, a volumetric lamp is mounted directly on the box or vice versa, its location is darkened, brightly illuminating the other significant elements.

For kitchen design in the style of industrial, techno, art-believe, it is not necessary to mask the ventilation box at all - it is an individual feature of the room. For the loft style, all components of the design are specially emphasized, highlighted with color, texture.

Custom made kitchen furniture

In the presence of a volumetric ventilation system, it is sometimes necessary to manufacture kitchen furniture on order. It is performed taking into account the shape, size, depth, location of the structure, most often almost completely hiding the necessary elements. In this case, the specialist measures all significant details, takes into account the shape of the room.
If the space of the room allows, individual elements are made quite bulky - for kitchens with a bay window or combined with a warmed balcony, this is quite acceptable. Then the table top smoothly bends around the box, turning into a window sill or forming a bar counter. When placing the box in one of the corners, it is recommended to put the kitchen along one wall, preferably longer. The L-shaped suite is suitable for a very small kitchen, the architectural ledge will then be shaped by a shallow floor cabinet, the same pendant, having, for the most part, a decorative purpose. Less often, the box “hides” completely behind the doors of one of the cupboard cases, but the expediency of such an element raises many questions.

Functional disguise

Depending on the design of the kitchen room, the box is designed:

  • many shelves - they place souvenirs, jars with spices, spices, cereals, small items of dishes;
  • bracket for a TV or a small screen mounted directly on the box;
  • a bar counter in the dining area - conveniently, if the box is located at the very entrance, then various pictures and wallpapers are hung on it;
  • portal false fireplace or window imitation, which create the impression that the projection is here not by chance.

TV should not be placed in the area of the gas stove or sink, since the probability of failure of such equipment there is very high, due to high humidity, temperature.

Variants of decorative masking

There are many options for non-functional, but very aesthetic design:

  • antique column - this type of decoration is suitable for apartment design in the Mediterranean style. Natural or artificial stone, decorative tile, plaster moldings are welcome. The column is located directly in front of the vertical box, corresponding to its width;
  • drywall niche - made from floor to ceiling, the box is slightly increased, which allows you to make it open or closed cabinet for kitchen trifles;
  • the central element - for the loft style, the design is made of panels under white or red brick, the high-tech accepts mirror tiles or frosted glass, the baroque - a small colored mosaic;
  • decoration with a uniform material - the box and nearby walls are covered with the same tile, painted with one paint or pasted over with wallpaper. So the protrusion becomes very subtle;
  • combination with a kitchen apron - a horizontal strip passes through the box, which is a continuation of the apron and is lined equally with it;
  • decorating with an artificial stone or tile "under the brick" is suitable for the classical style of the interior, the design is enclosed in full or individual bright elements are made;
  • slate - the element is made of dark material, on which you can write with chalk or made of metal, then it is decorated with decorative magnets;
  • patterns, ornaments - suitable for country styles, oriental. The design is decorated with hand-painted, rustic motifs, Chinese characters. Towel hooks, tacks are attached to one of the planes.

Conclusion

The kitchen is a multifunctional room, it is important to equip it as conveniently and aesthetically as possible. There are many design ideas for decorating, hiding ventilation boxes in small or large kitchens. When self-design fails in any way, multiple technical, aesthetic questions arise, in this regard, you should contact a professional designer with experience in the field of apartment layouts with various types of exhaust systems.
