Do-it-yourself chair decor - ways and examples

Old furniture does not always need decor, there are many more cases when it will be appropriate. Dyeing or sewing covers will help to update the interior or fit the old chairs in a new style. On the eve of holidays, the decor of the chairs with flowers, ribbons, themed capes will help to create the appropriate atmosphere. To restore the furniture to its former attractiveness and even make it even better, we will need a little: desire and inspiration.

Old heroes in new color

Coloring is the easiest and fastest way to update old chairs. Will be new furniture monochrome, multi-colored or patterned depends on the imagination and preferences. The only question left is how to choose paint.

  • Stain will perfectly emphasize the beauty of the old tree. It comes in different shades, but for restoration it is still better to give preference to dark.
  • Dairy natural paints are absolutely harmless, they give the surface a charming haze and vintage look. Masking tape will help create a contrasting striped pattern or pattern on the chairs.
  • Latex or oil paints provide a rich bright color. Stools will become more modern if the legs are painted in different colors.
  • Paint spray allows you to create any pattern through a stencil. Alternatively, you can put a lace napkin on the seat, backrest, chair handles and apply paint through it. The result will be a delicate rustic pattern.

Works are carried out in the following order:

  • From the surface they remove the old coating with emery paper.
  • Degrease, ground.
  • After drying, they are painted in one or several layers with paint or stain, and then coated with varnish.

Decoupage

A very popular technique, which is also used to update old furniture. Decoupage is the process of sticking images (applied on a napkin or very thin paper) on the surface.

Various techniques allow you to get the desired texture or visual effect: gilding, aging (brushing, crackle, chebbi), artistic or three-dimensional drawing. Not rarely use a combination of several decorative effects. The choice of pictures and technology depends primarily on the style of the interior. The chair, updated with the corresponding drawings, will perfectly fit into the interior of ethno, military, country, Provence, loft, shebbi-chic, eclecticism.

Stool renewal is carried out in several stages. Furniture is trimmed from the old coating, varnish or paint, degreased and primed. Next, apply the main background acrylic paint. After drying, a pattern is glued to the surface, treated with paints, additional elements and coated with varnish.

Covers: for all occasions

Covers for chairs are not only a way to decorate old, but generally new, furniture, they are much more functional: they serve as protection from pollution, damage, help to enter furniture for a given interior style or just update the furnishings, are casual and solemn.

Patterns for the cover most convenient to do with the help of a model. The chair is pasted over with newspapers or tracing paper, then the homemade scissor case is cut into individual elements. The accuracy of the pattern depends on correctly taken measurements. And of course we should not forget about the allowances, the cut error, the shrinkage of the fabric after washing.

Cloth covers

Covers can be easily made by hand. On ordinary chairs with a back will need about 1.5-2 meters of fabric. It should be noted that the decor of the chair should match the style of the interior, emphasize and complement it.

  • Cotton fabrics will be appropriate in Provence or Country styles. For the first, choose pastel colors with a pattern in a small flower, and a large cell will best complement the etnic.
  • Eco style will help emphasize the capes of coarse burlap. To give them a modern touch, you can add a cover with patches of denim, which also goes well with wood.
  • In the classical interiors use more durable fabrics with a large pattern, matte or satin sheen, for example, gabardine.

It is possible to use almost any fabric for sewing of a cover or to combine a little. Chairs with faux fur covers with the same "socks" on the legs will look very interesting.

Knitted covers

Knitted covers will be particularly appropriate in the winter, they will be associated with warmth and comfort. Look knitted things very interesting, as if a huge sweater pulled on a frozen chair. The best would be a large volume pattern of thick yarn pastel color. Of course, if your soul requires it, you can choose brighter shades.

An unusual addition will be the socks for the legs. Dressed in “shoes” chairs look original and never scratch the flooring. Crochet usually knit lace capes, filled with summer lightness and coolness. In addition, original handmade items will make the atmosphere calm and truly homely.

Holiday Felt Covers

Felt familiar to every needlewoman. It is very easy to work with this material, therefore it is often used in festive decor. On the eve of any event covers on the backs of chairs made of felt, made in the theme of the holiday, will be an excellent addition and decoration.

On New Year's Eve, you can also sew covers of mittens or capes in the form of Santa Claus hats on the backs. In general, the options are countless, everything is limited only by the imagination of the master.

Custom ideas

If the issue of the decor of the chairs is deepened, there is no doubt that a variety of sometimes unexpected materials can be used. You can’t surprise anyone with simple coloring; rods, ropes, flowers, candy, tree bark and old discs are used.

Rope chair decor

This option is considered more suitable for massive stools and chairs. Although if you wish, you can try to decorate more sophisticated furniture. Upholstery is removed from the chair and for each individual element (legs, slats, handles) prepare pieces of twine of the required length. Then follow a simple technique: fix the end of the rope with a stapler or a small nail and begin to wrap the product tightly. The other end is fixed in the same way. On the backs of the chair, you can make simple weaving, which will become a noticeable decoration.

The rope can be left monochromatic or decorate at will. In general, not only a rope can be used for the winding, it can be artificial rattan or cloth scraps twisted with a bundle.

Natural materials

The use of natural materials is important not only in school crafts. Even Italian designers (Andrea Magnani and Giovanni Delvezzio from Re Sign studio) distinguished themselves with a simple bark but an unexpected idea to decorate chairs with bark. Not everyone can buy designer furniture, but anyone can take the idea into service and bring it to life.

Wooden chairs should be as close as possible to natural material, so they are cleaned of varnish, rubbed with fine sandpaper and left in this form. The maximum that can be done - cover with stain to give shade. The prepared bark of the tree is glued in a free order, the designers for pasting chose one leg and back.

Another interesting approach is to decorate the chairs with flat pebbles. The stone is glued directly onto the seat and backrest. An unusual chair can decorate a bathroom, a balcony or a garden, especially if there are other nautical items next to it.

Mosaic

If in addition to the old chairs of the house there are still unnecessary or damaged discs, you can decorate the furniture element with a mosaic. A pattern made of small colored pieces will look original and interesting, and the updated chair will perfectly fit into almost any interior.

The mirror side of the disks is rubbed with fine emery paper, after which they glue colored glossy paper onto it. Then cut the disc into equal squares (it is more convenient to immediately divide them into colors). The chair also needs to be prepared. Surface sanding, degreasing and priming. Mosaic squares are glued in turn in the form of a selected pattern or randomly. After drying, the gaps between the “tiles” are filled with construction putty, and the surface is varnished.

Pompon chair

Pompon chair decoration is very costly in terms of material and time, but as a result, the restored chair looks very bright and cozy. It will ideally complement the children's room, and may be the motley accent of the bedroom or living room. It is more convenient to fasten pompons on a grid or a piece of cloth. At the end of the work, the soft lining is fixed on the seat and back of the chair. If necessary, the decoration can be easily removed and washed. Very interesting pompon Seats will look on the stools in the kitchen.

Chair-bed

The old chair does not have to stay at home; it can find its new place in the garden or on the terrace in the form of an original flower bed. In this case, restore, restore, repair it is not necessary.

But if the idea requires that the stool can be re-painted or even painted with bright colors. Then cut a hole in the seat and set the pot with flowers.

The conclusion suggests itself: there would be chairs, and there is sure to be a suitable option for decorating them. It is not necessary for this to be an artist-restorer. Anyone can update or decorate the furniture, and then with a sense of complete satisfaction, sit on the fruits of their labor.
